It’s been 15 years since The Notebook came out in theaters.

The Notebook is about two teens, Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling), who fall in love and are then separated for years. Though they pursue their own paths, fate brings them back together, and they are faced with a big decision. I am not going to give any details away for those who haven’t seen the movie, but if you haven’t… today is the day to do it! Spoiler Alert: Don’t forget the tissue box. You’re going to need it!

Did you know that some scenes from the movie were filmed in Charleston, South Carolina? The Holy City has also served as the setting for other films, including The Patriot, Cold Mountain and The Legend of Bagger Vance, which was actually shot at Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

While visiting Charleston last week, we decided to follow the footsteps of Allie and Noah, and check out five of the sites featured in the film.

Boone Hall Plantation

The famed estate and working farm served as the setting for the Hamilton’s (Allie’s family summer house).

Cypress Gardens

During a lake scene, Allie and Noah are on a boat surrounded by swans at Cypress Gardens. The animals, which aren’t native to the area, were trained actors brought in to follow the boat in the scene. Filming took place in January, to avoid the resident alligators, which were in a  hibernation-like state known as brumation.

We imported our own special birds for this photo

College of Charleston

The home of the Cougars served as the stand-in for the Allie’s college.

We were able to import the birds to Charleston College.

American Theater

Allie and Noah watch a movie at this theater, and then lie on the street just outside watching the traffic light. Note: The traffic light was brought in for production. There is no actual traffic light at this location.

We couldn’t send the bird back so it followed us along our Notebook Movie site tour

High Cotton

At one point in the movie, Noah looks through a restaurant window and sees Allie dining with her fiancé. That scene was shot at High Cotton.
