The Charleston Battery has been thrilling soccer enthusiasts in Charleston since 1993, when the newly formed team joined the USISL, then a small but growing outdoor league with 23 teams. Just three seasons later, the team proved it had what it took for A-league play after winning the 1996 Pro-Division League. Under the Head Coach, Mike Anhaeuser and Assistant Coach, Mark Watson the team plays on Daniel Island in the Blackbaud Stadium. Completed in April 1999 the Blackbaud Stadium became the first privately-funded soccer-specific stadium in the United States. Styled after the classic English soccer experience, the stadium seats 5,100 and even includes an English style pub.
In the tradition of soccer clubs around the world, the Charleston Battery have a legion of faithful, vocal supporters known as "The Regiment" — the official supporter's club of the Charleston Battery. The Regiment's goal is to, have a lot of fun. ...sing, yell and make noise, stand and cheer during the games...and goad other Battery fans to do the same.
