Everything Old is New Again

Charleston’s been recycling since the -mid-20th century. We call it antiquing.

Both experienced collectors and novice treasure-seekers enjoy the offerings of Charleston’s famed Antiques District, a section of Lower King Street between Beaufain and Queen streets. You’ll find it all here: furniture; silver flatware and tableware; fine china, porcelain and crystal vases; decorative artwork; and estate jewelry. Some of these pieces date from all periods of American history, from the Revolutionary War to antebellum treasures to the 20th century, while others come all the way from Europe, Asia and Africa. Undoubtedly, there’s something for everyone and in every budget on Lower King. According to readers of Travel + Leisure magazine, Charleston’s antique shopping is the finest in the country—they’ve voted it No. 1 in the magazine’s “America’s Favorite Cities” list in recent years. And the Lowcountry’s trademark cordiality consistently keeps Charleston ranked as America’s No. 1 “friendliest” city among the nation’s travel and tourism professionals. With titles like these, it’s no wonder antique dealers from across the county look at the “Holy City” as a must-visit destination.

Charleston also boasts some of the nation’s foremost experts-in-residence in period English and American furniture, silver, porcelain and art. The preservation of these artifacts is a specialty practiced by this educated group of artisans in their own right who understand the importance of keeping their discoveries as close to pristine as possible while making them livable. They understand that when a piece has been conserved correctly and lasted 200 or 300 years, it’s going to last 200 more.

In addition the shops along Lower King, visitors can stroll a couple of blocks west on Market Street to enjoy antiquing in a favorite shopping area for locals. Or walk a few blocks over  to East Bay Street where even more antique shops mingle with art galleries and other establishments. It’s also worth a trip off the peninsula to venture out in either direction—West Ashley or Mount Pleasant—to browse other family-curated treasure troves of unique collectibles. Happy antiquing!
